The sedimentary basin partially overlays the Kalkaindji province, the Birrindudu Basin and Wolfe Basin. The Bonaparte Basin is a frontier basin in the north of the Northern Territory with a proven hydrocarbon system. Several large gas fields have been discovered offshore (undeveloped Contingent Resources of 2. 7 Tcf in Petrel, Tern and Frigate) and the producing Black Tip field (2P 933 Bcf) supplies gas to Darwin.
The Bonaparte Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) project was initially planned to cover the deployment of a floating, production, storage and offloading (FPSO) LNG facility in the Bonaparte Basin in the Timor Sea, off the northern coast of Australia. The facility would be used to develop the Petrel, Tern and Frigate natural gas fields. The Bonaparte Basin is located in coastal waters off the north coast of Australia, straddling the border between Western Australia and the Northern Territory, and is one of Australias most significant gas provinces. Santos has had a long and important association with the Bonaparte Basin, with its interests including; the producing Darwin LNG project, the Petrel, Tern and Frigate fieldsbonaparte basin gas The Bonaparte Basin had produced 11 GL of oil to end2000 but only 0. 11 BCM of gas due mainly to market limitations. Remaining known reserves are 33. 42 GL of oil and 668. 55 BCM of gas. The basin developed during two phases of Palaeozoic extension and Late Triassic compression prior to the onset of Mesozoic extension.
